TOPIC: Triage of the Breast Cancer Patient: The Domino Effect
PRESENTER: Jen McKenzie

There are increasing rates of women being diagnosed with Breast Cancer every year, but survival rates are also increasing. This means we have to focus on patient quality of life post Breast Cancer. Women treated for Breast Cancer face a plethora of potentially debilitating side effects. Early referral to Allied Health is essential to prevent a cascade of dysfunction for women following a Breast Cancer diagnosis. Jen will present on the most common side effects of Breast Cancer treatment and how they present.

Jen McKenzie is a Director and Co-Founder of The McKenzie Clinic, specializing as a Lymphoedema Physiotherapist and an ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Known as “The Breast Cancer Physio,” Jen focuses on post-cancer rehabilitation, particularly in breast cancer care, where she enhances referral pathways and supports individuals in their recovery journey. Her expertise lies in women’s health, fitness, and exercise, emphasizing the management of lymphoedema and improving quality of life post-treatment.

TOPIC: Managing our way through the Obesity and Ageing crisis
PRESENTER: Andrew McKenzie

Obesity rates in Australia continue to climb. This combined with an ageing population presents a challenging problem ahead for the health system. Andrew will discuss how we got here and the strategies we can apply to enable Sunshine Coast residents to achieve better health outcomes and reduce the stress on the health system.

Andrew McKenzie is a Director at The McKenzie Clinic and a skilled physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, and nutritionist. With a Doctorate in Physiotherapy, he specializes in treating musculoskeletal conditions and has a strong focus on weight management and chronic disease prevention. His areas of interest include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, fitness, metabolic health, post-cancer care, post-menopause, and sarcopenia. Andrew is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of his clients through comprehensive, personalized care.

David was born in Toowoomba and raised on the family dairy farm near Jondaryan.  His first job was milking cows. He attended country primary schools at Acland and Jondaryan before boarding at Concordia Lutheran College where he was Head Boarder Boy and School Captain.

He studied law and economics at the University of Queensland and worked for national law firms in Brisbane.  David then spent over three years in London working in legal and corporate roles while his wife Melinda pursued her opera singing career throughout Europe. They returned home a decade ago to raise their daughters in beautiful Toowoomba. Their third child, a son, was born in late 2017.

During these years, David served in a range of senior leadership positions at Heritage Bank and volunteered for many community organisations including the Vanguard Laundry, the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce, Empire Theatres Foundation, Leukaemia Foundation, Salem/Northridge Aged Care Facilities, and Landcare.

He was also appointed to local and state boards such as the Southern Downs Regional Council Audit and Risk Committee and Opera Queensland. He was elected as the member for Toowoomba South in July 2016.

David has served in a number of Opposition portfolios including Shadow Attorney-General, Shadow Minister for Justice, Shadow Treasurer, and Shadow Minister for Investment and Trade.
